Klapping

A nocturnal pilgrimage to an out-of-bounds football court.&#38;nbsp; Synchronised breathing, ritual dances, obscure football history, acclamations, refrains and Cruyffian* technique.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;
Flirting with a scary boundary between fiction and reality, Klapping is a new urban movement form founded by Feras the Shield and Maestro Ahil. They initiate the audience into this strange, but familiar, new form;&#38;nbsp; Starting with its history, moving through foundations and fashion codes and arriving at the euphoria of a battle, over the course of the evening the audience is initiated, beginning their transformation towards football deity.&#38;nbsp; By bathing/immersing in football paraphernalia and reveling in the energy of the court, Feras the Shield and Maestro Ahil guide the audience through this search for profound spiritual significance in the idiosyncratic codes and rituals of football.&#38;nbsp; 
*Cruyffian refers to concepts developed by the late, Dutch, footballer, Johan Cruyff.&#38;nbsp;︎︎

Cross Cultures︎2020
Pharrell Williams, halfpipes &#38;amp; football... Cross Cultures explores the fluid contemporary identities of ‘Generation Y’. Street subcultures emerged as an expression of multicultural difference, defying traditional societal structures and enacting resistance. The environments and locations where street artists develop their craft are intrinsic to how street art is made. Born in Dubai to Palestinian parents and later, relocating to Western Sydney, Shaheen’s practice speaks to the multicultural mix of Arabic and Australian forms of street culture and sport.

Motivated by Australian artists Ahilan Ratnamohan, Shaun Gladwell and UK writer, King Adz, Cross Cultures focuses on the subcultures of hip hop, skating, football freestyle and klapping to identify shared aspects of the urban body’s figural and malleable language. Shaheen collaborates with Sydney-based street artists to illustrate ‘street etiquette’, movement vocabulary, fashion and found objects. He presents an emic expression that allows for the reinterpretation of street artists as alternate beings, no longer confined to the suburban settings of courts and skate parks. Instead, they find themselves in dialogue with art, practicing migration and carving an authentic existence away from commoditisation. Conversely, brands such as Red Bull and Nike have given street cultures a platform to further explore and create within their communities. 
In blending elements of video, photography, dance with installations of readymade objects, abstract forms and durable materials, Cross Cultures represents the opportunity for sport and street cultures to transcend commercialisation and ratify themselves as art forms.

Complex Interplay ︎2023


In Complex Interplay, Feras draws from his work as a performer and choreographer to invite audiences to move through the 1-acre Penrith Regional Gallery site in new ways. Through playful interventions, Feras encourages an exploration of the in-between spaces, which exist between or around the primary areas of the exhibition spaces and cafe. Often overlooked, these in-between spaces can hold hidden significance that goes unnoticed in our daily patterns.

Taste in music, taste in fashion, taste in furniture, taste in colours… taste is what forms our individuality and informs our decisions. Our taste is often shaped by a complex interplay of factors. These include our personal experiences, cultural background, and social environment. It’s common to overlook the profound impact that context and limitation can have on these choices.

Through sculptural interventions that inhabit designated spaces throughout the gallery site, I encourage you to rethink how you navigate the in-between spaces and negotiate restrictions. Your invitation as a visitor is to be compelled to venture down the less familiar route allowing for new movements, viewpoints, and spatial relationships. The sculptural interventions direct us to examine our own preferences, decisions, and position as we move through space.

Look around you… these are suggestions and not instructions. When you reach each sculpture, ask yourself: what are the restrictions, where am I, and what are my choices… then go.

	Complex Interplay was the first iteration of Penrith Regional Gallery’s program titled ‘Show me the way’. Show me the way is a new initiative that brings together artists, designers, and educators to develop artworks that respond to and allow deeper understanding of the social history of the Gallery and its surrounds. These commissioned artworks will be acquired by Penrith Regional Gallery and have an ongoing place as artistic resources for school groups and visitors to explore the Gallery.

Our Side of Things︎2023

A look into Freestyle Football in Australia.
Our Side of Things was a hybrid public event and exhibition that embraces the layered subculture of freestyle football in Australia. Influenced by football (soccer), circus, breaking (breakdance), hip hop battle culture and many other forms, with its roots in ancient Southern and South East Asia, freestyle football represents a contemporary border-breaking art form that is quickly gathering momentum through digital platforms.

Pip Stafford interviews Feras Shaheen and Jay Hennicke, curators of Our Side of Things. The installation and associated programs were a vivid representation of freestyle football battles, workshops, and a celebration of the culture, incorporating dance, design, and sports. In this interview Feras recounts his experience combining his interest in dance and football, while Jay talks about his journey as a freestyle footballer that started at 14. The episode records their insights into this unique culture and its representation within the gallery. They share the inspiration behind aesthetics of the installation, freestyle football competition experiences, and their influences from other cultures and communities.

Forum Q is a creative space conceptualised and designed by artist Feras Shaheen. Opened in November 2021.
Forum Q is a creative space on Lithgow Street, Campbelltown - for people to gather, train, and create. The space functions based on your interaction.

You can use the casted, soft floor to break (dance not your bones) or train in other acrobatic forms. Mirrors are there to help you learn choreography or take selfies… or to check if you have tabouli in your teeth. Bean bags are provided to do some light reading about why public creative spaces are important. Maybe use the space to enjoy your regular, sugar free latte with caramel drizzle and extra froth at 120 degrees while you watch some local talent jamming (another word for practicing, not the ‘jam’ the fruit preserves). You can use the space to take creative photos and videos for your social media profile to level up your content creation skills…‘I would like to acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land on which I went to high school, where I began my creative practice and pay my respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging.

Growing up in the very diverse South West Sydney introduced me to many talented creatives and mentors that have guided me through various aspects of street culture.’

Re-Function︎2023


Objects that occupy our homes are reminders of comfort. They are essentially invisible when they are performing their function correctly. Users only seem to notice them when they rebel or cease to perform their designated function. Within ‘Re-Function’, dance is the object.
This was my first time working with professional ballet dancers. Part of my excitement was in the potential of a rare collaboration. In the lead up to our collaboration, I didn’t have the ‘how’ component figured out, however once we started, it flowed with clarity. 
 
I am a big believer in not having a single approach to creating choreography - I prefer the context and the people I am working with to inform my method. It was clear before stepping into rehearsals, that it wasn’t about making them move like I do. The intention behind the first week of rehearsals was to facilitate an exchange and negotiation of stories, style, culture, personality and where these all intersect. I was lucky enough to have a very collaborative and open minded group of dancers, willing to be pushed away from their comfort but also be ready to flourish within their comfort. They even joined me at a dance battle event…
I was not interested in reproducing an idea that already exists. I was interested in ideas we don’t yet know the outcome of. Starting from a place of familiarity, but launching into the unknown, using initial discomfort to fuel the process. Playfulness was the common tool throughout the whole experience. By treating a purpose as a suggestion, rather than an instruction, we created a piece that demonstrates what we discovered through re-functioning. The result - a screen dance work that is choreographed in collaboration with the users and the chair (acting as the sixth user), to display the flexibility and adaptation of the space, the music, and the lens.
The idea is not to rebel. The idea is to see it from a different perspective so we can push and extend its functions. Functions with an ’s’. As many of them as we can get…

In this talk, Feras invites us into his process of experimentation, showcasing the importance of failure, risk and collaboration. In this TEDx (walk &#38;amp;) talk, Feras works with collaborators Azzam and Yuki to guide us through how experimentation is core to his practice, and his life. It's a reminder to us all that experimentation isn't just an artistic practice, but something we can all embrace in our own lives.
